LOLA’s Noisy Neighbors releases “Ayaw ni Lola” Music Video

FUBU International presents LOLA’s Noisy Neighbors composed of 3 rap superstars KrazyKyle, Doughboy, Ladyzasta, and EDM producer Penitent. The group’s combined talent resulted in the track “Ayaw ni Lola.”

The general listening public will initially not recognize this song as Pinoy rap because of its danceable nature. The track almost begs for the listener to fist their pump to the music. LOLA’s Noise Neighbors used Pinoy rap as their medium and infused it with electro dance beats. The song can prove to be an earworm: playing the song ten times will leave the word ‘punyeta’ stuck in the head, if only because cuss words are not usually used in songs. It becomes catchier as it was played over a fresher technique in hiphop production.

The interesting thing about this song is in the way it mixes hiphop and EDM elements. This would probably be the first time most people will hear this kind of sound from a local artist or group, a sound most usually represented in the international mainstream by the Black Eyed Peas, Far East Movement, LMFAO, and Dev.

The lyrics are easy to understand with their mix of Filipino and English words. The title of the track already reveals Lola’s conservative ways and her short temper. “She want it all and deserve it ‘cuz/ Don’t care how much it costs / She got her daddy paying for the things she can’t afford.” These lines tell of a girl that has a sugar daddy boyfriend. This illustrates the opposite of the stereotypical Lola’s girl that always obeys what her Lola says.

The music video mixes conservative Filipino culture and party-oriented lifestyle of younger Filipinos. The video’s epic ending has Lola spanking Ladyzasta. Now, that’s a laugh.

LOLA’s Noisy Neighbors offer a new and different dimension to the local rap scene. If this music fusion clicks with general music listeners, it would become the baseline reference for future sound fusion of Pinoy rap and electro dance music.

Fil-Canadian Elise Estrada out with U Don’t Need 2 Know

Fil-Canadian singer-songwriterElise Estrada released her latest single U Don’t Need 2 Know last January 14, 2014. The 2007 The Beat Music Awards champion is known for her hit singles released in Canada such as Insatiable, One Last Time and Lipstick.

U Don’t Need 2 Know is easy to listening, playful to the ears and with a hint of fun. The music of the Motown era can be heard in the track. It’s like listening to a Jackson 5-influenced solo artist, just with a double mega-dose of girly spunk and modern pop.

The lyrics talk about the complicated life of a very self-conscious girl. Girls have their secrets to make themselves feel good. They can be embarrassed, but they all laugh and they just keep on being themselves. “Got the lipstick extra luscious / A girl’s gotta have her tricks / Got the curves right, so damn tight / And you don’t need to know how I did tonight / ‘Cause some secrets are just between us girls.” It is very telling of how us boys don’t know how them girls prepare to look their best and have a stunning on us.

U Don’t Need 2 Know is the first single in her upcoming third album “Round 3” under XOXO Entertainment Corp and will be released locally by Viva Records. The said album is produced by Adam Hurstfield, who has also worked with Ne-Yo, rapper Ray-J, and Def Leppard among others.

Elise Estrada will be in Manila this July 2014 to promote her new album Round 3 and will do a series of shows that will be announced at a later date.

Silent Sanctuary releases new single “Sa’Yo”

After the release of their first two singles from their album “Monodramatic”, Silent Sanctuary returns to their roots of bittersweet melodies with the latest track “Sa’Yo”. Two versions of the song appears in the album — the full band and the orchestral version.

The 4-minute song, according to songwriter and lead vocalist Sarkie Sarangay, was inspired by a friend’s story of being uncertain in love. “Yung lyrics nya kasi parang conversation lang ng dalawang tao na may feelings sa isa’t-isa pero hindi pa talaga nagkakaintindihan kung gusto ba talaga nila maging sila,” Sarkie shares.

Instead of a simple band performance video, the band had the idea of using dance choreography to illustrate the story of the song. Silent Sanctuary had help from their friends the SexBomb Girls in this. The band expresses their gratitude to Joyce Canimo, who danced the lead and Aira Bermudez who had a hand in the choreography. Kid Guevarra, who plays guitars for Tanya Markova and Dhruva Tara, directed the said music video.

The music video was launched on June 9, 2014 at 70’s Bistro where Ebe Dancel and Moonstar 88 also appeared to support the band. Silent Sanctuary’s cellist Anjo Inacay also proposed to his girlfriend at the said launch. Watch the video below.

Celestine: Toni as a Singer-Songwriter

Toni Gonzaga is more than just an actress and a TV personality in her latest album “Celestine” released under Star Records. She takes on the role of singer-songwriter in her career’s seventh album since her debut in 2001. The album, previously slated for a 2013 release, comes four years after her last album “All Me” in 2010.

It shows who I really am as a singer, as an artist,” Toni shares. “My real name, Celestine, means heavenly. And like my name, I believe that this album is a great gift from heaven. It took a while for it to be finished but God’s timing is always perfect. This is the best album I’ve ever done.”

The album contains original tracks “This Love Is Like,” which she co-wrote with seasoned composer and album producer Jonathan Manalo, and “Awit Ni Ginny,” a song she wrote based on her character’s name in Star Cinema’s box-office hit movie “Starting Over Again” while waiting on the set of the film.

Jack Daniel’s Indiefest with the Indie Bests

Jack Daniel’s Philippines played host to some of the best local indie acts last May 30 as JD IndieFest showcased 24 bands alternating between two stages at Capitol Commons in Pasig City.

I’ve become used to mainstream rock music but hearing the featured bands play at the JD IndieFest, I must say that their level of performance did not disappoint. The indie bands had their own crowd, their own following. I laid witness as bands like Imelda, Curbside, Flying Ipis, Peso Movement and Reklamo rocked the two stages.

Jack Daniel's Indiefest with the Indie Bests

And as promised, the Top Three Band finalists from last year’s JD Indiefest, namely Mr. Bone and the Boneyard Circus, Kelevra, and Blue Boy Bites Back also brought their energy and their magic onstage.

I can’t help myself but reminisce my high school days when I was listening to rock music. Much like others who were present in the event that were not familiar with some of the acts and the music they offered us, I felt myself captured, absorbed and willing to listen. This was another side of rock I find I can really enjoy.

Having been in the IndieFest, drinking Jack Daniel’s, and meeting new friends surely made this another experience I look forward to enjoying again. So thank you, Jack Daniel‘s!

Singer-songwriter Kito Romualdez releases self-titled album

Acoustic artist Kito Romualdez is back from Canada to bring us his music with the release of his self-titled album under Viva Records.

Originally a native of San Juan, Manila, the singer-songwriter spent most of his young life in Canada. His musical influences are artists who write their own songs: John Mayer, Jason Mraz, John Legend, Alicia Keys, etc. Maybe that’s why Kito is into creating his own material. In fact, the first track off his debut is a tune he wrote himself.

Ready Ka Na Ba?” is a call to action where Kito asks if you are ready to be in a relationship. “Ready ka na ba lumipad, sumayaw at umikot-ikot sa mundong kong ito? Ready ka na ba magsaya, kumanta sa mundong nakakahilo?” Kito asks until he hits that little verse of assurance, “Kapit lang, andito ako.”

Ready Knb

His 5-track CD also contains “Jack & Jill,” where he spins the nursery rhyme and turns it into a love story. “Jack and Jill didn’t fall down a hill, Jack and Jill fell in love. Jack didn’t break his crown, he broke his beating heart from Jill not being around,” Kito croons.

Another track included in the album is his version of “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” original popularized by Grammy-awarded blues and country artist Bonnie Raitt. “Country music is big from where I come from in Canada, and this cover is my nod to the folks back there,” Kito explains. The album also contains his cover of OPM alt-pop hit “Suntok Sa Buwan” and another one of his originals “She Could Be the One.”
