If you haven’t yet heard the music of the Australian teenage pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, it may be time to start listening to them as the band widely tipped to be the next big thing in the music scene.
Younger than One Direction members or Justin Bieber, the pop-punk band has initially gained popularity on Youtube when they started to post covers singing hits from Blink 182, Mike Posner, Mayday Parade and even a Justin Bieber song. Frontman Luke Hemmings (17), guitarist Michael Clifford (18), bassist Calum Hood (18), and drummer Ashton Irwin (19) have since earned more than 5 million YouTube hits with more than a million Youtube subscribers. They were also one of the Tumblr’s most reblogged artists of the year. They instantly gained 3 million followers on Twitter and more than 4 million likes on their Facebook fan page. Many of the new artists today have been using social media to engage and connect to their listeners. Through the band’s savvy use of social media, their fan base grew and is still growing.
One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson also contributed to the fame of the band. He tweeted to his 15 million followers that he is a fan of the band and posted a link of a video of 5SOS performing “Gotta Get Out.” The band’s international following increased significantly once again. Niall Horan also tweeted and posted a link to the video for “Out of My Limit.” After their successful opening slot for supporting Hot Chelle Rae in an Australian tour, they also were invited to support One Direction on their Take Me Home world tour.
People from Australia called them the next One Direction but they are not. They are not boyband, they’re a band, rockers. All of them play an instrument and write their own songs. “We’re not trying to be anything that we’re not. We’re not the new anything. We’re the first 5 Seconds of Summer,” says Luke Hemmings.
Their music is reminiscent of the sounds of Boys Like Girls and Blink 182, but 5SOS has already made their own brand and style. Five Seconds of Summer has already come far from their humble beginnings. None of them came from a rich background, and the band members came from West Sydney suburb of Riverstone that is not generally considered to be very nice.
They were awarded as the Best International Newcomer in the Kerrang! Awards and was named MTV Buzzworthy’s Fan-Favourite Breakthrough Band of 2013. Their chart-topping song “She Looks So Perfect” reached the number one spot on iTunes in 39 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland. “Don’t Stop,” debuted at the second top spot in the UK Billboard charts. They recently released their debut self-titled album. 5SOS easily dominated single charts with five hits in iTunes including “Amnesia” which has already peaked at the top spot. Meanwhile, “Kiss Me, Kiss Me” debuts at number 28 in the Billboard Charts. Indeed, 5 Seconds of Summer is about to become a big deal if they aren’t yet.
