Song Feature: Akin Ka Na Lang – Morissette Amon

Friendzoned? “Akin Ka Na Lang” is a song about the pain of accepting the reality of just being friends.

According to the composer Kiko Salazar, the song was written two years ago based on his personal experience. He then wrote it as a tribute to those who have felt the same kind of unrequited love.

The piano intro most common in movie and teleserye theme songs gives “Akin Ka Na Lang” an elegant and sophisticated flavor. The song may live in a place of severe pain and bitterness, but it manages to hold on to bright beams of hope. “Akin ka na lang ang dinadasal sa araw-araw… / Akin ka na lang at maghihintay hanggang akin ka na giliw.

Morissette Amon proves to be a perfect match for the song. She manages to release the right kind emotions to bring the story to life. At a young age, she was able draw out genuine pain from the song. While there may be no need for a Mariah Carey whistle effect, it adds a bit more spice and angst and makes listeners feel the pain that needs to be heard. Although there were some instances when she sounded like her former The Voice Philippines coach Sarah Geronimo, but Morissette definitely made a mark on her own in most parts of it.

Kiko Salazar and Morissette are in it to win it. Looking back on Himig Handog’s trend of winning songs, “Akin Ka Na Lang” cannot be bumped off easily. It has a story comparable to Soc Villanueva’s “Kung Ako Na Lang Sana” perfomed by Bituin Escalante and the classy sound similar to that of Arnel De Pano’s “Kailan Kaya Kita Mamahalin” interpreted by Ana Fegi.
