American rocker and lead vocalist of the band Audioslave, Chris Cornell has died.

In a statement by his representative Brian Bumbery to the Associated press, he said Cornell died Wednesday night, May 17, in Detroit at the age of 52. Prior to his death, Cornell was able to perform in a show in the same city.

The cause of death was yet to be revealed as the death comes “sudden and unexpected” shocking his family members. The statement also said that the family will be working very closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

Before joining Audioslave, Cornell was the front-man of the 90’s band Soundgarden which is part of the Pacific Northwestern grunge scene alongside Nirvana. The band was best known for the Grammy Award-winning singles ‘Black Hole Sun’ and ‘Spoonman’.

Aside from his band career, Cornell also made successful outing as a solo artist. He had a successful solo album in 1999, the Euphoria Morning. His last album Higher Truth released in 2015, even reached the US top 20. He also did tours with Linkin Park and Aerosmith and played Hyde Park in 2012.

Cornell was also credited for the song You Know My Name which was used as the official theme song of the James Bond movie Casino Royal in 2006.
