“If you want to be a rock star or just be famous, then run down the street naked, you’ll make the news or something. But if you want music to be your livelihood, then play, play, play and play!” – Eddie Van Halen
Such may very well be the inspiration of all-female contemporary guitar trio Triple Fret for all they’ve been doing is play, play and play both here and abroad. The trio was formed in 2011 when the 3 were still students: Jenny Rivera and Marta Abejo from UP College of Music and Iqui Vinculado from UST Conservatory of Music. The trio has since performed in Turkey, Brunei, Japan and Spain to list a few and they’ve always been received warmly by the international audience. Yet playing for Filipinos locally remains to be their favorite. And the love is not one-sided, as proved by a full-packed Ayala Museum during their debut record “Gitara Filipina” release last 2014.
2015 proved to be a winning year for Triple Fret as they received the Japan Guitar Association Award and the Harumi Award for Best Performance of an Original Contemporary Composition in Guitar. And as icing on top of that cake, they took home the top prize at the 27th Japan Guitar Ensemble Award held in Tokyo.
This time around, they’re again giving Filipino fans a chance to be serenaded as they partake in CCP’s concert series. The second leg of the series will take place at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater) on August 24, 2016 to be headlined by who else but Triple Fret.
Indulge your senses and be enthralled by this magnanimous trio, who’s giving “Pinay Power” both a kick and a punch.
