Black Saturday, city dwellers were mostly at their provinces or even out of the country. Nights like this one used to be somber, and sober. But somewhere in the ever hustling city of Makati, as nighttime fell, rocking babes emerged. Enter the second run of 12 Monkeys Music Hall and Pub’s “GRRRLS night” for 2016.
The first one was held last January with just as powerful line-up of women from the local music scene. This time around, the line-up included Gracenote, Glaiza de Castro and Arci Munoz with her band Philia. If such is not drool-worthy, it would be hard to say what is.
Gracenote started the night half past nine with a slew of their own songs and then turned 90’s Stevie B ballad “Dream About You” into their own brand of pop-rock which had the crowd warmed up whilst singing along. Eunice Jorge showcased not just her singing but also her guitar and keyboard-playing skills. She would once in a while approach the crowd too enticing them to sing along.
Second in line is singer-actress Glaiza de Castro bringing her indie-rock sound on stage with much gusto. The crowd’s energy and delight was clearly felt with every song she would play, sing from her album ‘Synthesis.’ She would interact and fib with the audience in-between songs and even gave in to the clamor to sing ‘Roses’ by The Chainsmokers, only it ended up being Chasing Pavements – causing riotous laughter in the venue. She also sang bits of ‘Fantastic Baby’ by Korean male group Big Bang, probably still hungover from her short trip to SoKor a week before. And ‘twas the night when G cussed with passion, “I fuckin love you” to the heart-eyed audience.
Last but oh so not the least is Philia, fronted by hotter than chili peppers Ramona a.k.a. Arci Munoz. It was rock and roll and roar all through the night as heavy sounds of rock filled the pub and cheering girls appeared to be howling hounds. She took shots from some lucky members of the audience while onstage and that didn’t make her any less or a rockstar – for she was still growling like a Queen Lioness and headbanging like it won’t crane her neck.
It was an overall rad experience not just for the ladies who performed but for the ladies who made up majority of the crowd as well. You can say the Easter eggs hatched early and boy, hot chicks emerged.
12 Monkeys Music Hall and Pub is located at the 5th level of Century Mall, Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City.
