Tanghalang Pilipino opens its 28th season with a rap musical inspired by the works of the rapper-songwriter Gloc-9. The Layeta Bucoy’s “Kleptomaniacs,” is running at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino of the Cultural Center of the Philippines from July 11 to 27, 2014.
Kleptomaniacs is a production of many first; it is the first rap musical originally written and performed from beginning till end in a rap and fliptop form most commonly known in Pinoy Rap Music scene. This is also the first production that takes local hiphop culture and interweaves it with the story of a community. In Kleptomaniacs the underground economy and its marginalized urban culture is brought to the fore, its many stories told through rap and fliptop, which highlights a particular search for identity and becoming.
Directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio with composition and arrangement by Jose Carlo L. Frios and Nina Virgin, the musical is lead by the young cast of Nicco Manalo and Thea Yraztorza with Tanghalang Pilipino’s Actors Company. Other members of the production are Jed Caballero Balsamo (Musical Direction and Co-arrangement), Nestee Mamaril Gamilla (Choreography), James Reyes (Costume Design), and John Batalla (Lighting Design).
