There could be no better legacy for a band than to have their songs remain to be enjoyed and sang by many, decades after its release.
80’s band, Micheal Learns to Rock, reached the 90s and 2000s music-loving crowd with their continuous flow of new ballads increasing their popularity in leaps and bounds. Most of their earlier songs like “The Actor”, “Sleeping Child” and “25 minutes” arguably became classics.
Michael Learns To Rock, a European soft rock/pop band, was formed in the spring of 1988 by singer and keyboard player Jascha Richter with drummer Kare Wanscher, guitarist and producer Mikkel Lentz, and Soren Madsen in Aarhus, Denmark. The group, whose name is a tribute to pop legend Michael Jackson, started as a little cafe band, but after winning the annual talent contest in July 1988 they went on to become one of the world’s most successful bands. MLTR signed with JP Andersen, as their manager, and the group inked a recording deal with Medley Records, which became part of EMI.
The band released their self-titled debut album in September 1991 which includes the smash hit “The Actor”. In 1992, “The Actor” went #1 on the charts in Norway, Sweden, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
Jascha Richter wrote songs for their second album “Colours”, released in October 1993 which includes hit ballads “Sleeping Child” and “25 Minutes”, the main singles that secured album sales passing the 1 million mark.
Early 2001, MLTR went on a five week tour to Dubai, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and China to promote the compilation of “19 Love Songs” which included new single “The Ghost Of You”, released only in Asia. In 2007 MLTR released “The Live Adventures of Michael Learns to Rock” and in 2008, the seventh studio album “Eternity” with Mikkel Lentz as sole producer, came out.
The album “Eternity” included the Thailand #1 single “Sweetest Surprise” and the Asian hit “It´s Gonna Make Sense”, popularized further by Philippine reality show “Pinoy Big Brother”.
From 2007 to 2012 Michael Learns to Rock have played 87 concerts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Denmark, China, India and Singapore. After more than 20 years into their career, new markets are still opening for the band, with the total number of concerts approaching 500.
Since their international debut in September 1991, the group sold more than 12 million albums.. After ‘Michael Learns To Rock’ the band released ‘Colours’ (1993), ‘Played on Pepper’ (1995), ‘Nothing to Lose’ (1997), ‘Michael Learns to Rock – Greatest Hits’ (1999), ‘Blue Night’ (2000), ‘Take Me to Your Heart’ / ‘Michael Learns to Rock’ (2004), ‘The Best Of Michael Learns To Rock – Live’ (2007), and ‘Eternity’ (2008). The group now consists of three members, after parting ways with Madsen in 1999.
What makes Michael Learns to Rock story exceptional aside from the band being one of the most successful acts from Denmark? Their success was not marred by any scandals, or drugs making them last for more than 25 minutes, or even years.
And this coming Saturday September 19, 2015, Michael Learns To Rock will rock Manila again with their Michael Learns To Rock Live in Manila Concert at the SMART Araneta Coliseum 8pm. The concert is presented by Midas Promotions and CCA Entertainmet with Warner Music.
