Paradise International Music Festival 2016

Exactly a week after, two paint-themed music festivals were held at Makati and McKinley respectively, a festival intended to take you to ‘paradise’ meanwhile was held last April 9 at Aseana City Open Grounds. Not entirely a new venue for music festivals since “Goodvybes Music Festival” last February. This time around, it’s “Paradise International Music Festival” or “Paradise IMF” which took over the massive grounds.

The music fest opened its doors earlier than the usual. Local band Lenses kicked off Paradise IMF at 10:30 A.M. and was quickly followed by 3 other local bands (Giniling Festival, Maude, Yolanda Moon) bringing their own sounds to the show. DJ Katsy Lee provided the upbeat sounds right around lunchtime to perk up the crowd. Canadian electro/hip hop duo, The Airplane Boys followed suit keeping the crowd going despite the heat of high noon. Cheats, Clara Benin and recently returning from hiatus, Hale were next in line. A back to back DJ set from Jess Milner then DJ Nina with Joyce Pring were right on queue.

Sister act 4th Impact, who made waves at last year’s X-Factor UK and placed 5th on the finals made their way on stage right before the sets of Itchyworm and Up Dharma Down.

YouTube sensation and pop act Austin Mahone set into motion what would be an exuberant night for festival-goers. Rudimental’s DJ set had the crowd dancing whilst awaiting the 2 main stars of the night. And when it was time for Wiz Khalifa’s set, everyone was dancing, singing, huffing and puffing – in a manner of speaking. Wiz seemed to have been enjoying the show as he would often smile and dance around and at one point even encouraged the crowd to pass around the giant inflatable cigarette.

But truly, the highlight of the night which everyone held their breaths for, Yeezus himself. Kanye West with ‘all of the lights’ (pun intended) brought the audience on their feet. Not a single one showing lethargy, not even those who have been standing their grounds since morning. People were singing, rapping, howling, clapping, awed by the man himself. Kanye sang a few of his popular songs as well as songs from his week-old, new album, The Life of Pablo. He even gave a speech of sorts when he performed the first song from said album, Famous, even repeating said song 3 times to drive to a point. He spoke of his Grammy-grabbing stint a few years back that made “that bitch” famous (insert tswizzle here).

International DJs Afrojack and then DJ Rivero capped off what was already a blasphemously crazy fun night playing their own brand of music and keeping the crowd going well till the wee hours of the morning. Some Valor Day weekend that was!

Over-all, it would probably have to be one of the most well-attended festivals seen locally. From celebrities to foreigners, and all the beautiful people gathered around in one venue for the love (or hate, who knows) of Kanye and Wiz and all the other artists on the line-up. It would also be good to point out that this is a more organized one from the working RFID to separate queues for beer, water, hard drinks, juices/softdrinks to more selection of food stalls and a considerably larger but less aggressive number of security.

And as a line from one song goes: “I’ll take you to Paradise”, well, we hath been taken.
