GigsManila opens its first ever GigsManila Pulse!
Every week GigsManila will choose artists who will compete for a specific title and bragging rights with the help of their fans and the online community.
And after careful deliberations, GigsManila came up with these three sought-after, scream-inducing, and fan-fainting young artists of today. Who among Daniel Padilla, James Reid and Alden Richards will earn the title “Ultimate OPM Heartthrob?”
Teen King Daniel came from one of the most popular Philippine showbiz royalty. Born Daniel John Ford Padilla, he started his career taking minor roles like in Gimik 2010, and starred in youth-oriented shows like Growing Up. Daniel later became part of the hit primetime drama series Princess and I opposite Kathryn Bernardo.
Daniel’s career took a leap as his tandem with Kathryn dramatically won the hearts of young and young-at-heart fans as they portrayed kilig-inducing roles as love team in several high-rated TV shows and blockbuster movies.
Aside from being the maangas boy-next-door as his usual role, Daniel as a recording artist and bassist of the band, Parking 5 pictures a different side. Because of his influence, he was chosen as one of the Original Pilipino Music Junior Ambassadors tasked to promote local music to Filipino youth.
Daniel participated in the multimedia songwriting and music video competition, Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs twice. In 2013, he interpreted Jungee Marcelo’s “Nasa Iyo Na Ang Lahat” which bagged four special awards, and snatched the “Song of the Year” award at the PMPC Star Awards for Music 2013. In 2014, he was chosen to interpret Meljohn Magno’s composition “Simpleng Tulad Mo.” Every song he released, may it be an original or a cover, is an instant radio-friendly hit, and would top different local music charts.
Daniel already released three studio albums under Star Records which includes his Double Platinum certified self-titled debut album Daniel also occupied the wide space of Araneta Coliseum twice that hailed him as ‘Male Concert Performer of the Year’ by PMPC Star Awards for Music for two consecutive years.
Do we need to say that majority of Daniel fans are young girls who has Facebook, Twitter and Intagram account to monitor the heartthrob’s activities? Meaning, Daniel’s fans are all social media activists ready to pull their smart phones for Daniel. With million followers across all social media channels, Daniel became one of the most followed celebrities in the Philippines.
Our gut-feel is that Daniel will again interpret a song at Himig Handog. It won’t be a surprise if it will soon be called “Daniel Padilla P-Pop Love Songs” and will still be a hit. He will probably have another primetime drama and sing the theme song himself. We are still not sure what will happen to his acting career once the Kathniel tandem split. But we are quite sure that his music career will go a long way with fans that are consistent, avid consumers (spell out: downloaders), wild and proud screamers during his mall tours and continue to trend any topic about Daniel in social media. We think that the most commendable traits of Daniel’s fans is that they are brave enough to defend him from bashers and critics.
After being named as Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash Big Winner in 2010, Robert James Reid or better known as James Reid, returned as Cross Sandford opposite Nadine Lustre in the rom-com film Diary ng Panget: The Movie. Considered his biggest break, Diary ng Panget also paved way to the success of their loveteam and created enough buzz on social media to hail them to fame.
In 2011, James launched his first digital album “We are Whatever” with original compositions written by James himself and and his PBB housemate and friend, Bret Jackson. His self-titled album, released in 2013, has two covers and four original songs- two of which he penned himself.
James received overflowing support from his fans when he also graced the soundtrack of his hit movie Diary ng Panget, Talk Back and You’re Dead, and Para sa Hopeless Romantic. His album Reid Alert debuted at number 2 in iTunes Philippines tailing Taylor Swift’s 1989.
Songs from his album received positive reviews. Some were charted to several music channels and radio stations, and some were nominated in local music awards. If Daniel has P-Pop Love Song, James has Philpop. In this year’s Philpop Music Festival 2015 James interpreted Melchor Magno’s Musikaw.
Also just recently, James scored nomination at the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards for “Best Southeast Asian Act.”
The good looking-half of the Jadine tandem, James Reid alone, has an army of fans who actively participate in almost all of his social media promotions. They can easily trend topics on Twitter and defend him from bashers and warfreak fans of other love teams.
James is undeniably promising and can possibly make an impact in the local pop culture. We think he will again be casted in another movie adaptation of a best-selling book. And will also take care of the soundtrack probably with Nadine.
Set aside his abdominal muscles, which by the way is one of the highlights of the cover of his new album, James has a lot more to offer to his beloved fans. He can definitely act, and sing much better than other actor-turned-recording artists. Since he can write his own songs, we predict that he will have another album filled with original compositions.
Perhaps the most famous at this moment, , Richard Reyes Faulkerson, Jr. or more popularly known as Alden Richards, became part of the youth oriented show Tween Hearts. He later appeared in other shows such as Mundo Mo’y Akin and Carmela.
In 2011, Alden made a breakthrough performance in the horror film The Road. He received several awards as a newcomer in the big screen including Best New Actor at the Golden Screen Awards. His popularity further skyrocketed because of the creation of an accidental love team between him and his Eat Bulaga! co-host Maine Mendoza a.k.a “Yaya Dub.”
Alden’s career as a singer started when he became part of Tween Academy: Class of 2012 movie soundtrack singing“Kaba,” a duet with his former screen partner Louise delos Reyes.
In 2013, Universal Records released his self-titled album which contained seven tracks including a revival single “Haplos.”
Just this September 2015, GMA Records released his new single “Wish I May,” which will be part of his second album. The track debuted at #1 in iTunes Philippine Chart, which booted out Justin Bieber on the top spot.
Because of his daily appearance in Eat Bulaga! and the phenomenal success of #AlDub, he gained horde of fans and bunch of followers on social media. According to socialbakers.com, Alden’s Twitter account is the second “Fastest-Growing Twitter Profiles in the Philippines” for the past month, behind Maine Mendoza’s Twitter handle. Not to mention his audience fans in Eat Bulaga! who would roar in simple euphoria whenever Alden appears. We know because we do. :P
“Strike whilst the iron is hot” they say. The right time for Alden Richards is now and it’s here. May it be in his acting or singing career. Beyond dimples, he has the potential to keep pace with other newcomers in the recording industry. Commercials and product endorsements are pouring in. We predict that his singing career will also benefit from this and we will see and hear more songs from the masa’s sweetheart.
Who knows, GMA Records might be soon release a novelty song “Pabebe Wave.”
While they are all gifted with good looks and charismatic appeal, who do you think can maintain the popularity and the lead in the local music industry? Who can make a good influence consistently to the listeners? And who can create outstanding contributions to Original Pinoy Music?
