When push comes to shove, who would you rather choose to be with: the one you love or the one that loves you? This question has become one of the biggest romantic dilemmas that have been tackled in all forms of art. Edwin Marollano’s composition “Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako” talks about this same theme with X-Factor Philippines winner KZ Tandingan lending her skills as the interpreter.
Although the theme has been asked too many times in love triangle scenarios too many times to count, “Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako” seems to have found a way to give voice to the internal conversation that happens inside of a person who is facing such a problem. Although the lyrics seem to talk to the person the person the narrator loves, it seems more like a monologue declaring the confusion. “Anong paiiralin ko / isip ba o ang puso ko?” KZ Tandingan proves to be the capable vocalist that she is by providing the right kind of drama for the tension laid out by Edwin Marollano’s lyrics.
Edwin Marollano started composing at the age of 13. Some of the songs under his belt are Tuesday Vargas’ “Di Ako Bakla” and Kyla’s “I Feel For You.” He was also one of the finalists in the 2012 Philippine Popular Music Festival with “Kesa” interpreted by Daniel Grospe.
