After the phenomenal success of his 2013 Himig Handog entry “Nasa Iyo Na Ang Lahat” by Jungee Marcelo, Daniel Padilla returns to the Himig Handog stage, but this time with MJ Magno’s “Simpleng Tulad Mo.”
The song tells a simple story: a guy dreaming about his lady love. Imagine MJ Magno sitting on a couch with his guitar daydreaming about a girl he wants to pursue. Music then whispers in his ears. And voila! A song has been created.
This type of easy-listening and easy to sing along piece makes a perfect harana song. While traditional harana has become more or less obsolete, singing this song in a gathering or a videoke session in front of a girl you love can definitely score a point not only in the videoke machine but in the heart of that girl.
The simplicity of “Simpleng Tulad Mo” is its main weapon: simple lyrics, simple and catchy melody, simple tune. Add the finger-snapping beat and the radio-friendly appeal, the song is definitely a hit. All that without even the influence of its interpreter.
Daniel Padilla’s range is spot on with this type of song. His relaxed and simple take on MJ Magno’s entry can definitely be a testimonial to his non-believers that he has what it takes to be in the Philippine music industry.
While Himig Handog is well-known to give the awards to the most bittersweet love songs, it will not be a surprise if Simpleng Tulad Mo simply sneaks in to snatch the top prize.
