Song Review: Amnesia – 5 Seconds of Summer

Following the success of 5 Seconds of Summer‘s previous chart-topping singles “She Looks So Perfect” and “Don’t Stop,” the Australian pop rock band has just released “Amnesia” as their third promotional single from their self-titled studio album. The song is co-written by the Madden brothers, Benjamin and Joel, which undeniably has a different vibe throughout the song compared to the band’s previous hits.

It’s hard to hear your name when I haven’t seen you in so long,” this song brings a bit of nostalgia and can’t help but make the listener emotional. This track talks about a guy who has come out of a failed relationship and who still has feelings for his ex-girlfriend. He wishes that he could “wake up with amnesia and forget about the stupid little things.

The slow acoustic tune with minimal chord progression might sound similar to Plain T’s “Hey There Delilah” and “Little Things” by One Direction but “Amnesia” is overflowing with emotions from lyrics to vocals. It definitely shows another side of the band listeners haven’t seen their usual pop-punk perfrrmances.

The official lyric video was filmed in simple black-and-white. The four lonely guys are sitting with a plain white background. The lyrics appear on their faces and bodies as well as in different objects in the untidy bedroom, a bedroom that echoes loud with painful memories. The video ends with the emptiness of the room that reflects the song’s lyrics about missing a lost love.

This latest track has peaked at the number one position in iTunes US chart during its first week of release. This song will surely gain radio airplay and a higher possibility to snatch the top spot in other local and international music charts.
