From the Philippines to the world stage, Arnel Pineda faithfully shares his music.
Born September 5, 1967, Arnel Pineda started his career in music at 15 as the lead singer of the group Ijos which used to sing in a pizza parlor in Manila.
After Ijos, Arnel became part of several bands who competed in different contests here and abroad. But his first break came in 1999 when Warner Bros. recorded his first solo album entitled “Arnel Pineda.” During that time Arnel continued performing with his band New Age while doing the album.
His big break came in 2006 when he formed The Zoo band from the encouragement of talent manager and director Bert de Leon. Together with Mon Cajipe, Emil Bondoc, Edgar Mendoza and Mckoy Alcantara they inked a contract with de Leon’s Sundance Entertainement Corp. The Zoo band became a hit in different bars in Manila and Olongapo and that prompted MCA Universal to give them their first album “Zoology.”
While enjoying his career with The Zoo band, Arnel didn’t realize that it will open bigger doors for him. Through the video uploaded by a certain Noel Gomez (on Youtube) of him singing cover songs of the Journey band, Arnel caught the attention of one of Journey’s members Neal Schon who at that time is looking for a replacement to Steve Perry.
Schon contacted Arnel via email inviting him to audition but he first thought it a spam or hoax. Through Gomez’s persuasion Arnel emailed back and it then signaled the start of a bigger career and singing stage for him. After flying to the US with Bert de Leon on August 2007 for a 2-day audition, Pineda was announced as the new lead singer of trh Journey band on December 2007.
After that, he started to tour with the band. In February of 2008, Arnel debuted as Journey’s lead vocalist at the Vina del Mar International Song Festival in Chile. By June 2008, Journey released its first album “Revelation” with Arnel as the lead vocals. The album became an instant hit debuting in Billboards Top 200 album chart at no. 5. In March 2011 the band released another album entitled “Eclipse” which debuted at no.13 on Billboard top 200 album chart.
Arnel’s journey to the Journey band was also feature in a film by Ramona Diaz “Don’t Stop Believin’: Every Man’s Journey.” The film features how Arnel Pineda was discovered by Journey and chronicles his first year with the band. The documentary was exhibited at the Tribeca International Film Festival in the US.
With the success he reached in being part of an international band, Arnel keeps on coming back in the country doing shows and gigs.
Arnel is currently a mainstay of ABS-CBN’s longest running variety show ASAP and is also seen performing in other shows. He also started the “Asian Music Camp” talent competition aimed at discovering new Asian talents and help them fulfill their dreams.
It’s really not impossible to achieve one’s dream if one doesn’t stop believing and just enjoy the journey.
