Thai-Italian artist Valentina Ploy today releases her debut album ‘PLOY’, an album full of intimate storytelling and insight to her personal experiences. Fans can listen to ‘PLOY’ here valentinaploy.lnk.to/Album-PLOY and watch the video for lead track “To Myself” here.
On the title of the album, Valentina explains, “Every Thai person has 2 names – Valentina is my first name and it’s Italian, and Ploy is my Thai name that my mom gave to me. In Thai, Ploy means precious gemstones. I really love gemstones and I wanted to pair each stone to each song, so each song represents a different ploy, which also represents a different side of me and a different healing energy. My wish is for the album to feel like a friend, and when people listen to the songs while going through personal experiences, hopefully they can relate with each of the ploys, each of the songs.”
As a singer-songwriter, Valentina conceived of ‘PLOY’ through journaling her emotions and experiences. “The album was created from a collection of so many songs I had written in the last couple of years, and selecting the ones that I resonate with the most, even now,” she explains. The album follow a storyline from the happiest song “Bla Bli Blu”, kicking off a journey that depicts the phases of love and heartbreak.
“I call it the natural cycle of life and emotions, which I genuinely believe happens with all things. ’PLOY’ is a shared story of being human and experiencing your emotions, which is something I want to emphasize on because I feel like there are so many people around me who don’t feel the feelings they feel, and instead try to bury them. And this has repercussions. This is something really close to my heart and that’s why it’s the central idea of my album – to allow ourselves to feel all our emotions without judgement.”
The focus track “To Myself” is about the realisation that especially in our darkest moments, you have to take care of yourself before you’re able to move on from the situation. “It’s my song for letting go,” Valentina explains. “Even though you may be in a zone where you’re really feeling the heartbreak, clearly not over it, you have to decide to move forward by giving the love back to yourself.”
On the music video, she shares, “It starts from where we left off at ‘Shoreditch Road’, all the main singles from the album take place in the same universe. After I drown in the bath in the previous video, I get up from another bath. There are people carrying me and I look different – I have ploys all over me. ‘To Myself’ is about self-love through heartbreak, choosing to love yourself first in a very real and authentic, but painful way. It was very empowering to write that song. I hope the music video delivers that feeling as well.”
