Twenty years after hitting the airwaves, Spice Girls’ hit song “Wannabe” has been revitalized via a new commercial advocating women empowerment.
The hit song has became Project Everyone’s 2016 anthem aiming to push for women’s rights. Under the direction of MJ Delaney, the music video features women dancers from Nigeria, India, Canada and the U.K. pushing for several women’s rights such as better quality education for women, equal pay for equal work and an end to gender-based violence and child marriage.
One of the Spice Girls member Victoria Beckham who sees the video said it was a wonderful idea.
“How fabulous it is that after 20 years, the legacy of the Spice Girls’ — ‘Girl Power’ — is being used to encourage and empower a whole new generation,” said Beckham.
According to the creators of the video, the main goal of it is to call out the politicians who agreed to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development in 2015. They also hope to present the responses to the visual at the U.N. General Assembly this coming September.
