“Technically I am not allowed to speak in Filipino.”
Those were the words from Sponge Cola’s Vocalist Yael Yuzon in a recent gig in one of the super malls in the metro.
Yuzon was tapped as the opening act at the phone launch of LG’s newest model held April 18 at SM Megamall.
During his performance, instead of singing the original lyrics of their band’s hit “Jeepney”, he ended up translating the song on the spot in English after being told by the mall management that speaking Filipino is not allowed on that part of the building because it was a premium section of the mall.

But it seemed Yael was not offended by the management’s policy and he just made fun out of it. He even shared the experience on his Instagram account.

Man that version of Jeepney was really something. Haha. Had a blast performing at SM Mega Fashion Hall today for the #LGG6PH launch event. The smartphone features Hi-Fi Quad DAC, perfect for my quick recordings. #LGG6MySocialMediaPhone @LGPhilippines #foodstagram #foodporn #food
Meanwhile, here’s SM management’s statement regarding the issue.
We would like to clarify the information being circulated online regarding performances that happen in our malls.
We would like to reiterate that we promote all international and local entertainment acts in all our mall event areas nationwide. Moreover, we have been a proud supporter of the Filipino Talent as we promote many celebrity and movie mall tours as week long celebrations of Independence Day and Linggo ng Wika.
We are now looking into this matter carefully and will reach out to the concerned party. We apologize for any inconvenience this incident may have caused at this time.
